Research with Mental Health Consumers about Involuntary Mental Health Treatment.
There is an increasing worldwide movement of people who have experienced mental illness (mental health consumers) being proactive in their recovery, and in discussions about mental health policy and services generally. Involving consumers in mental health research is in line with recommendations of the state government’s mental health reform agenda “Stepping Up,” which state that consumers, carers and families should have meaningful input at all levels. This kind of contribution can be made through participation in a current research project called: “Research with Mental Health Consumers about Involuntary Mental Health Treatment,” coordinated by the South Australian Office of the Public Advocate (OPA), and funded by the Rotary Health Research Fund.
The aim is to provide research evidence about how people experience being admitted to hospital without their consent at times when they are very unwell (being detained); or through having their treatment directed by doctors (community treatment orders) rather than choosing their own. The study is happening when mental health law is changing in South Australia, and will provide important insights into the way mental health services are provided. Consumers can participate by choosing to be part of a small Focus Group of 4-6 people, or through an individual interview.
A consumer involved commented: “It’s great for consumer rights and empowerment”
This research project has Health SA research ethics approval and is currently endorsed by various NGOs and consumer groups and Consumer Consultants.  The research project requires broad representation from consumers  across the state for a open and transparent process and will also be advertised in the general state print media .
You will be provided with $20.00 reimbursement and any travel expenses, you may have in order to attend.  If you are interested in participating, please call Ellie Rosenfeld at the Office of the Public Advocate on (08) 8342 8214 any day but Wednesdays, or on her mobile on 0416 735 284.  Email address: Rosenfeld.Ellen@agd.sa.gov.au
